Johannesburg Transport explores inequality in South Africa through the city’s public transport system, a network relied upon predominantly by Black South Africans and often marked by danger, precarity and necessity. The photographs were made from the passenger seat of my own moving car, using flash and long exposures to capture people travelling by taxi, waiting at ranks and bus stops, or walking through the city instead. That position was deliberate: I was observing a system I understood from within South African life, while remaining physically and socially separated from it by the privilege of private transport. The work sits within that contradiction, using movement, distance and partial visibility to examine how inequality shapes not only how people move through Johannesburg, but how differently the same city can be experienced.
